Welcome to BVI BOOK TREE!

The seed

The concept of BVI Book Tree all started with a group of like-minded book lovers who saw an opportunity to spread the joy of books amongst our young BVI community.  Inspired by Dolly Parton’s ‘Imagination Library’, which mails free books to kids all over the US, we went to work brainstorming a way to adapt this concept for the BVI.

our roots

BVI Book Tree is a project of the registered Non Profit Organisation, Lions Club of Tortola which is powered by BVI based book shop, NOOK and in partnership with UniteBVI, another registered Non-Profit Organisation in the Territory.

One Leaf at a time

BVI Book Tree aims to change the lives of young people within the community, one page (leaf) at a time by reinforcing the importance of literacy and introducing our new readers to books in a captivating way which cultivates a genuine love for reading. The program is designed to also present opportunities for our well-seasoned readers to reignite their passion for reading and provide another outlet to feed their literary interest

Getting in the “Grove”

Starting in conjunction with the 2023/2024 academic year, BVI Book Tree intends to launch monthly book drives with scheduled pop-up “Book Stops” around the island.  Here kids of all ages will be able receive free, new and gently-used books to take home, in addition to the option of exchanging and donating their own books. Secondly, BVI Book Tree will create a primary school-based program in partnership with The Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports, for the regular lending and distribution of books, along with an in-school reading schedule to get kids excited and motivated to pick up a book.

Branching Out

BVI Book Tree is community driven – we encourage everyone to take part! Community minded businesses, groups and individuals interested in assisting in expanding the reach of this initiative are encouraged to get involved, whether through in-kind donations, volunteer service or other financial contributions.

Growing a Forest

Although we plan to start small, the possibilities of growth are endless!  We hope in the future, to branch out to the schools and communities of the other islands in the BVI and create new programs to include adult literacy and writing workshops.
